Unemployment Services Trust

Nearly one in four nonprofits are unaware of Alternative Unemployment Tax Option exclusively for 501(c)(3)s. Twenty-two percent of nonprofit agencies are unaware of a critical piece of federal legislation that allows them to opt out of the state tax-rated unemployment insurance system and pay only for their own unemployment claims, found the Division of Nonprofit Research at UST.

This valuable money-saving option, which has been available exclusively to 501(c)(3) organizations since 1972, allows nonprofits to stop overpaying into their state tax-rated system—a system that has significant monetary setbacks for nonprofit budgets.
